New Advanced Nuclear Plant DCD / COL Support
- Assisted an NSSS vendor in developing a design certification document (DCD) for its advanced nuclear plant design by providing technical and licensing support in the area of accident analysis. Assisting and advising in responding to regulatory questions on the DCD submittal.
- Acting as Owner representative in reviewing and accepting design, performing construction interface, and resolving licensing issues associated with construction of the first US COL nuclear facility. Other tasks have included developing a normal and accident environmental and seismic condition document, improving calculation process for accepting external design agency calculations, and updating the facility's functional performance specification.
- Performed focused self-assessment on acceptability of a COL facility's construction-engineering interface.
- Assisted a Midwest utility in performing research in support of a COL application.
Existing Plant Design Mod 50.59 Evals
- Qualified to perform 10 CFR 50.59 applicability determinations, screens and full evaluations at multiple plants.
- Qualified to perform 10 CFR 70.72 evaluations to address potential departures from COL approved design.
- Performed focused self-assessment on a plant Owner’s 10 CFR 50.59 Program. This self-assessment addressed effectiveness of screens, full evaluations, and related corrective action and provided recommendations.
Nuclear Security Support
- Provided engineering support to a security upgrade project at a Midwest nuclear facility to address the requirements of NRC orders regarding Design Basis Threat (DBT), which reviewing design requirements and design details relative to the NRC’s DBT order, coordinating 50.54(p) effectiveness reviews with the plant security staff, preparing 50.59 screens for impact on the existing unit, and preparing changes to the UFSAR and Physical Security Plan.
- Performed a self-assessment of the modification project in the aggregate to verify that all of the DBT Order requirements had been addressed.
- Chairing an IEEE Standard Working Group 3.2 responsible for updating IEEE Std 692 (Nuclear Station Security Requirements) to latest technology.
FSAR and Other Regulatory Compliance Support
Advent staff members have played a key role in helping clients to respond to regulatory commitments to validate FSARs and assisting with other licensing related efforts and issues. Advent has provided clients with services in the following areas:
- FSAR Updates and Validations
- Reportability Evaluations
- Living FSAR
- License Renewal (10 CFR 54)

Emergency Planning
Advent has experience in Emergency Planning, with a focus on evacuation studies involving populations surrounding critical facilities.
Through the use of various techniques, Advent is able to model an evacuation
and perform real-time interpretations of the results. These results contribute to
the overall analysis performed by our staff for an individual site and it's surrounding area.
Techniques include:
- Traffic Engineering Analysis
- Census Data Interpretation
- Weather Effects Analysis
- Computational Analysis
Benefits of Real-Time Analysis:
- Identifying Trouble Spots
- Recommendations of Alternate Routes
