Thermal Hydraulic

Tetra Tech Advent has long term and in-depth thermal-hydraulic expertise for analyzing normal, abnormal, and accident conditions. Such analyses have included ultimate heat sink and related cooling water system modeling, reactor shield wall radiative heat transfer, flow balancing of special filtered exhaust systems, high energy line break analysis, fire suppression system modeling, and room heat up calculations. Our expertise includes:

  • Fluid Flow (modeling and balancing)
  • Heat Transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation)
  • Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) effects
  • High Energy Line Breaks (HELB)
    • Environment
    • Jet impingement
  • Flooding (HELB/MELB)
  • Room heat up with and without pipe break effects

The GOTHIC computer code, developed and maintained by Numerical Applications Incorporated (NAI) under the direction of EPRI, is the industry standard for modeling multiphase, multi-component fluid flow. Tetra Tech Advent has extensive experience using the GOTHIC code to model and analyze design basis high energy line break scenarios and room heat-up calculations. Tetra Tech Advent is experienced in plant model development and validation, as well as performing calculations to identify problem locations and develop operator actions to reduce temperatures to within acceptable limits. Prior experience includes the development of temperature, pressure and relative humidity response profiles for main steam line and high energy line breaks at a Midwest PWR.

In addition to the application of GOTHIC, Tetra Tech Advent has developed several spreadsheet hydraulic models for the assessment of service and cooling water system capabilities.

Tetra Tech Advent also has experience in using RELAP for primary and secondary system modeling for FSAR Chapter 15 non-LOCA accident analysis.
